After being diagnosed in 2011 with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow plasma white blood cells, my wife Carolyn at the urging of the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) started The Villages Multiple Myeloma Support Group. In the beginning, there were only a handful of patients. Today, there are more than 150 patients and caregivers in the support group.
After 4 years of treatments consisting of 2 bone marrow transplants and several rounds of chemotherapy,
Carolyn lost her battle in October 2015. During those 4 years, there were many trips back and forth to Shands Hospital in Gainesville and Florida Cancer Specialists in The Villages adding many miles to the car and lots of gas.
